After Dr. O’Hara (Eve Best) discovers that Jackie faked the MRI scan of her back, they seem to make amends with each other fairly easily. It’s a touching moment in the chapel when O’Hara tells Jackie that the only reason she looks forward to coming to work is to hang out with Jackie. She even coordinates her shifts with Jackie’s. Dr. O’Hara has her own demons and she’s not so innocent when it comes to social drug use, but she enables Jackie when she comments that it’s not her business how she medicates the pain. Whether O’Hara is afraid of losing the one friend she has if she says something or not, in either case, she could lose her friend to an overdose.
Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) confronts Jackie about taking money from Dr. O’Hara behind his back after she promised she wouldn’t do it. Jackie gives a stunning performance, tears and all about how she’s “no prize” wife. She goes on about how she doesn’t have the confidence that Kevin does in financial security…then seals her brilliant performance with running to sit in his lap crying as she professes her love. I have to say, this was just genius. The way she manipulates the situation to make herself appeal to Kevin’s sympathies is fantastic. I mean, for a minute, I almost felt sorry for her then I realized ‘wait, she’s an addict, this is what addicts do’. They manipulate you.
Dr. Fitch Cooper (Peter Facinelli) is a real piece of work. I love Peter Facinelli but the character of Dr. Cooper is a prick. He is so self-centered but thinks he’s such a humanitarian because he’s a doctor — it’s almost surreal it borders on adorable. I don’t think anyone else could pull it off as well as Facinelli. What makes things worse, he tells Sam (Arjun Gupta) that he slept with his girlfriend and made it sound like he did him a favor by doing so. What happens next to Coop…well, let’s say he had it coming.
